Obituary of Rudolph S. Groth-Marnat

Rudolph, 96,of Montecito passed away, May 18, 2012. He was born in Mexico City on November 13, 1915, to Rudolf Groth and Berthe Marnat. He attended Holzminden in Germany and Cambridge University in England. Rudolph Groth-Marnat met Barbara Banks (now deceased, 1997) in Mexico City. They married in Pasadena, California on April 26, 1945. They were married for 51 years and raised their children (Gabrielle and Gary) in Pasadena. On November 12, 1999 he married Carolyn Chew. He was active in the Valley Hunt Club, California Club, and Birnam Wood Country Club. For most of his career he worked for Unocal as vice president in charge of international marketing and president of Unocal in Mexico. He was an avid stamp collector, tennis player, traveler, and scholar of history. Rudolph was an old world international gentleman, with great integrity, an active intellect, encyclopedic mind who was warm, poised, refined, elegant, and cultured. He is survived by his wife of 12 years, Carolyn Groth-Marnat, and children, Gay Groth-Marnat and Gary Groth-Marnat (Robin). He is also survived by step children Allegra Albertson and Bruce Albertson (Adrienne) and children Tallulah, Taylor, Paige and granddaughter Kimberley Murphy (Patrick) and great grandson, Emmet Murphy. A memorial service will be held at All Saints by the Sea Church in Montecito on May 26, 2012 at 2:00 followed by a reception at Casa Dorinda. Donations are encouraged to All Saints-by-the-Sea's Outreach program in memory of Rudolph Groth-Marnat in support of the Haiti School project.
