Daniel Craviotto

Obituary of Daniel F. Craviotto

Dan Craviotto, a prominent seventh generation Santa Barbara native and local businessman died at home on December 1st, 2011. Danny, as he was known to both family and friends, was born at the family home on San Andres Street in Santa Barbara on September 5th, 1927 to E. J. (Erasmo) Craviotto and Jenny Ocafrain, a French Basque immigrant. Together with his brother Charlie, they took over Craviotto Brothers’ Iron Works from their father E.J., who had established the business in 1916 with his brother Fred. Their craftsmanship, hard work, and honesty were known throughout the community. Their traditional ornamental ironwork is reflective in the Spanish architecture for which Santa Barbara is known. Dan attended Harding Elementary School, La Cumbre Junior High School, Santa Barbara High School and graduated from University of California Santa Barbara with a Bachelor of Arts degree in industrial arts. He served in the army post World War II and was stationed in the Philippines. After returning from the army, he married Carmen Arguedas on November 7, 1954. Together they raised four children Daniel, John, Cathleen, and Eileen. In his younger years he raced homing pigeons, played the violin, and loved to play basketball at the Recreation Center on Carrillo Street. Among his friends, he was known as Stomper for his love of red wine. He was a quiet patient man who had a passion for life, loved his family, and was a lifetime Notre Dame football fan. His parents Erasmo and Jenny Craviotto, and his brother Charles Craviotto precede him in death. He is survived by his loving wife Carmen, his four children Dan Jr. (Carol), John (Lori), Cathleen (John Marquardt) and Eileen (Joseph Velasco). Dan also leaves behind 10 grandchildren Nicole, Gabriella, Chris, Kristin, Michael, Brianna, Zachary, Benjamin, Akela and Ixaka. Dan loved spending time with his family whether it was on a family vacation, dinner at E.J.’s restaurant, or just a summer BBQ at home. Family was everything to Dan. He will be missed greatly. A prayer service will be held at 6:00 p.m. on Sunday night, December 4th, at McDermott- Crockett Mortuary, 2020 Chapala St. Santa Barbara.
