After they were married in 1933, the couple then moved to Santa Barbara. Mike was well known as a horticulturist in Landscape design and as a horseman. Karen and Mike had two children, Miguel Eugene O'Brien and Peter Arthur O'Brien (both deceased), and three grandchildren Karen O'Brien Plant, Dennis Michael O'Brien and Peter Arthur O'Brien Jr. She also had five great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren. Karen O'Brien took much pleasure in the "Danish Sisterhood" and she and Mike traveled extensively in their motor home. She also loved going out to dinner with family and friends, reading and spending time with her beloved dog, Molly. She was well loved by many and will be missed. For the past four years Karen has been tenderly cared for by her loving granddaughter "little Karen". No services will be held but contributions can be made in Karen's name to the Human Society of the United States; 2100 L Street, NW Washington, DC 20037, which she has been a member of for 90 years.
