Obituary of June Colfax

June Merritt Colfax of Goleta, California, died August 27, 2011 in Eugene, Oregon, of age related causes. She was 86. A close family service has been held. She was born June Merritt McLennan on June 27, 1925 in Bakersfield, California. She graduated from Taft High School, and then from the University of California at Santa Barbara in 1973 with a major in English after going back to school mid-life. While she was raising her children, the family lived in Virginia ,West Virginia, Bakersfield, then Santa Barbara, Calfiornia from 1963 on. She managed the Berkshire Terrace Apartments in Isla Vista for over 20 years, where she took great enjoyment in the opportunity to meet and converse with distinguished visiting scholars from all over the world. She had shorter terms of employment at Frimple's and substitute teaching. She was active locally for many years with the Sierra Club Teens, Girl Scouts, and the Santa Barbara AFS student exchange program.She was an avid gardener, hiker, and with additional interests in language, rocks, minerals and geology in general. She was an ardent reader of Science Fiction and Fantasy, and a lover of all forms of music. She is survived by her four living children, James Colfax and Douglas Colfax, Santa Barbara, California, Leslie Beverly, Eugene, Oregon, and David Colfax, Salem Oregon, 5 grandchildren, and her brother, William McLennan, and his two daughters. She was predeceased by her youngest daughter, Andrea Lynn Colfax. A graveside service to be held at 11:00am on Thursday, September 8th, 2011 at Goleta Cemetery, 44 South San Antonio Road, Santa Barbara, CA 93110.
